Gems are ridiculously cheap on the AH - seems broken!

PostScript pointed out to me that Gems were very cheap at the AH.....so after last nights session I checked it out. Sure enough, Squares cost about 140.....Perfect Squares 1000....

I've been working so hard and spending so much gold upgrading my jeweller, just to get a couple of triangles....but with about 10 minutes farming for gold, I've purchased enough Squares to fill all my gem slots (on NM Act 1).

Seems a little odd. Also seems like I won't be spending any more cash at the jewellers - apart from to remove gems.

Doesn't this seem a little broken to you all?

It's massively broken. They're trying to fix that in the next patch, iirc. They'll be reducing the costs of using the jeweler/blacksmith, for sure. I upgraded the blacksmith rather than the jeweler, because I kept finding more and more drops of higher-tier gems - however, I played through on one character until hell or so, so I might've done differently if I has multiple low-level chars.

They designed the game from a no-AH perspective (they didn't have enough people internally to test an AH). So jewelers & Blacksmiths are way over-priced compared to the AH.

They're fixing it in the next patch. Crafting a flawless square will cost 100g, instead of 20,000g
When you consider that they're reducing it to 0.5% of the original cost...it's seems like a pretty big oversight



I also think that blacksmith costs need redoing...
I mean even if it was free, it still technically costs money to craft (in the form of the money you're losing by not selling to a vendor/AH).
As it is now (for 99% of the game) selling stuff is an easy choice compared to crafting...especially when my materials don't carry over to the next difficulty

The crafting ingredients depend on the recipe, not the difficulty - but honestly, you can buy better, specific items on the AH for 1/5 of the price it costs to craft a level 60 item. 50,000g to craft that helm i have a recipe for, and it's 4 random properties. no thanks.

The ingrediants received from salvaging varies based on the item level,
but salvaging early on just gives me normal/nightmare ingrediants i'll probably never need at later levels.

Unless some high level recipes use fallen teeth or lizard eyes?

Well it is broken really, but its quite understandable. At the moment upgrading through the first 8 tiers (The tiers that also drop in the game) is to expensive compared to the amount of gems that drop. So people find more and more gems while nobody upgrades and thus gems keep flowing in the circuit, they dont dissapear for the upgrades. (It costs 729 lvl 8 gems to reach the last lvl, lvl 14 gems) And everyone knows, the more item X there are the less item X will be worth.

As for blacksmithing, people should see it as an alternative to the gamble vendor from diablo 2. You could have gotten a Stone of Jordan, or you could have gotten a really crappy blue ring.
Thats just how it works in diablo 3. I have crafted boots of which i earned a million by selling them on the AH, but i've also crafted boots i wouldn't even sell for 300 to the vendor.

Don't know about Diablo2,

but i look at blacksmithing as a chance to trade 2 or 3 bad items, to re-roll them into 1 possibly better item.
There is an inherent cost there...I've just traded 3 items for 1 (and more often than not, lost gold in the process).

If I have 2 or 3 items i don't want, I can sell those items for 5-20k each...buy an item for 50ks, which i know is good,

As you reach the top tiers of gear, I'm sure the limited number of useful items on the AH makes crafting attractive,
but at lower levels (similar to gemcrafting) it just seems like it costs too much compared to just using the AH.

Now they're cheap again, seems the prices often changes. Yesterday a square was 40k, now it's 250 gold

I'll try to sell em if I get the opportunity for some good profit, maybe it was a waste of money.
So if it works out, good; if it doesn't, meh people got bigger problems xD

well, after the new update to gemcrafting comes out, sellers will have to undercut the jeweler price.
They might be even cheaper than right now.

So if you're planning on a profit, I'd try it sooner rather than later Siv

flawless square emeralds are still quite pricey. i love how it tells you how much the item was the day before.
