    Missing hostile mob spawns(also, building in the spawn area)

    Ohai dar

    For the last month or so we've hardly had any random mob spawns on the server, mobs from spawners are still spawning.

    There is a few theories about why this is happening, one is that we might have a few too many friendly mobs (sheeps), two others involve a bug, or that the server has stopped spawning random mobs because the map has swollen to such ridicoulus size, because its trying to stop the lag.

    I'm making this thread to open a discussion, about what we could do, and if anyone knows the exact reason why this is happening.

    Yeah, this lack of mobs has made me stopped playing Minecraft.
    With the spawn, I don't understand why It's protected. No one is building there later, so it's just a death trap for new players. Fall down a hole, stuck.

    Another thing we mentioned on vent it who get the use of Admin in the server. We have a few regular players, but tbh I don't really see what use we could make out of being an admin.

    I killed the better part of 150 cows outside the main village a few days ago and then hostile mobs started spawning outside my castle. Only about 20, but it leads me to believe that indeed, we just have too many friendly mobs cached in constantly active zones (inactive zones tend to reset mobs).

    I also started encountering mobs underground too, but not as frequently as you'd expect.

    mob spawning is working as intended and is not being modified by any server setting or plugin, this is a problem for mojang.

    It's pretty much there too many mobs around, it seems slimed are really good at clogging the stuff up we could go for a /butcher I guess

    Edit: saying that I can't find any post about the latest patch and having this problem

    I'm at home this weekend, so I can assist in the slaughter of cattle if needed.

    getting new animals might be problematic, no? And there would still be tons left in places we only briefly explored

    Err, I would hold off on the mass slaughter. From what I read when I was looking into this, it seems that hostile mobs and passive mobs have separate limits so I don't think a cull would solve the problem.
    One thing that's possibly happened, and sounds like it has to a few other servers is that mobs can occasionally wander into unloaded chunks and do not get despawned properly (this could also explain why we sometimes run into skeletons and the like outside burning in the middle of the day in areas we have not visited often).
    Apparently, it's very likely for this to happen if you set off and travel in a straight line for a long distance.

    Short of directly editing the world files, one solution for this would be to set the server to Peaceful, then attempt to visit every area of the world explored to ensure that any mobs in active chunks get themselves despawned.
    I propose setting the server to Peaceful for a week or two to see if it makes a difference, and given the sparse hostile mob encounters at the moment, it may as well be anyway.

    arent there some serverside commands which can be used to kill all mobs in the game?

    Spawn area is protected by radius of 3 for a total of 9 blocks. Outside that free to build.

    edit: Also seemed the version of Bukkit we were using may have been the issue as it noted a problem with handing mob spawning. I updated the Bukkit to current release and should be all set.
