    Re: The Robots

@Boylee, true dat All fair points.

The only bit I feel I can rebut is the "I think it's also worth noting how some of the most basic lifeforms achieve the greatest survivability, for example, we will be long outlived by the humble cockroach. If the sole goal of evolution is to further survivability then why did evolution not halt several million years ago when the cockroach evolved?"

And that is simply because change won't stop in evolution. It has no "choice" whether to change, mutations happen. And provided it still allows the organism to live to reproduce, it is fine, and will continue. That is why we have such diversity in life, if it can happen, and allows the creature to survive, eventually it will happen (provided an infinite amount of time which we don't actually have). Evolution doesn't even have the "aim" to survive to reproduce, it just means when an organism doesn't, none of its genes get passed on.

    @Mac

I would still say they are NOT perfect. They just work, does not mean perfection.

For example: Plants are green due to chlorophyll, which gathers light energy. However, the most efficient colour to gather light energy (and therefore the perfect colour) is black. Yet despite this, plants are still green as it is adequate for their needs.

Creatures don't need to be perfectly adapted, only adapted enough to survive for so long.

EDIT: Also, cheers people, really enjoying this discussion

    Re: The Robots

How fucking depressing would the world be if all plants were black?

    Spoiler: Reveal
Besides black is only useful if you're harnessing an inefficient method of solar energy transfer, for example, most of our solar thermal collector technology. Chlorophyll is incredibly efficient at synthesizing energy from the red and blue bands of the spectrum and hence doesn't need to wring every last drop from sunlight.

You may wonder why plants discard (reflect) green light when that is the most abundant light wavelength available from our sun. The answer to this is theoretical but still very interesting. Scientists reckon that when Algae (which is the predecessor to modern plants) was evolving billions of years ago, competing organisms, namely archaea, were harnessing the red and blue wavelengths. At this time the oceans were dominated by these purple single-celled phototrophic bacteria, and who knows maybe with a different roll of the evolutionary dice we'd have purple trees and grass instead. Point is, the spectrum of light these archaea used is an exact mirror of that absorbed by chlorophyll. Algae adapted perfectly to compete with the dominant phototrophic organisms and eventually went on to become much more varied and sophisticated because it was more versatile.

Anyway I digress, the point I was originally aiming at but meandered away from, is the quandary of who defines perfection? Truth, beauty and perfection are all human constructs, and humans are natural constructs. As such, judging anything in the natural world by our constructs, measurements and standards is almost farcical in my opinion.

Also if I'm being pedantic about it, (which I usually am,) black isn't a colour, it's the total absence of light. Surfaces that you perceive as black are almost always an extremely dense purple or brown, (with the exception of the night sky). Because of this, black or rather colours approaching black are fairly uncommon in Earth's plant and animal kingdoms.

^ @ Sero, spoilered because we're so offtopic here that we've almost come full circle.

Also that teddy is a little creepy. More than a little actually. :S

Me, I'm still betting it'll be zombies, but after this, I might work against both, just in case

@Boylee : you rock bud I did a degree which included animal behaviour and evolutionary science, and I wish I could put it so eloquently.
Lets just say relatively speaking, evolution is pretty perfect.

    Re: The Robots

We had a post... somewhere... with a Virginia tech (or some other lab) quadcopter that could stick to walls and navigate tiny spaces? Anyone know where it is? I was trying to demonstrate to someone technological developments in cob-web removing

    Re: The Robots

I love those quadrotors. I was dreaming of attaching cameras to them and using them to get action shots of live sports games *in the field*. Particularly ice hockey. I figure those little buggers are agile and stable enough to get out of the way of play when players change direction, but will be able to follow the ball and the movements of the players.

    Re: The Robots

I was half expecting to hear some inhuman scream when it opened its mouth.

It looks fairly realistic until it moves. But the zombie complextion doesnt help the creepy factor.
The operating costs of salvation are through the roof.
