    Sea of Thieves

A few of us have taken advantage of the 3 for 2 months of play thing, and there's stuff I figure I should be posting, so, there we go.

    Re: Sea of Thieves

There was also a discussion on weapon damage last night, current values are as percentage of life bar:

    Sword: 20%
    Lunge: 50%
    Pistol: 53.8%
    Eye of reach: 63.8%
Blunderbuss: 14.76% per pellet, at ten pellets per shot.

Is this any good then? I was well excited for it but read a few mixed reviews? The game is apparently repetitive quickly ??

    Re: Sea of Thieves

    Mixed is the word.

Put it this way, if I were playing on my own I imagine I would have stopped already.

There is certainly truth in the reviews, it is quite repetitive at it's core. You mostly either go to island X and solve a riddle to find a chest, or work out that it's island Y depicted on a map and dig at the mark to find a chest, or travel to island Z to kill some skele-men and harvest their skulls. There are other things to do, such as skull forts and merchant quests, but they're less frequent or less enjoyable.

The quests themselves can be a bit drab, but when you consider that their primary purpose is to get you out on the sea where there is some good fun to be had, they don't do a bad job.

Simply sailing a ship is really quite enjoyable, and suitably challenging. You're presented with a variety of situations and environments to make your ideal heading not quite so ideal. You could be bobbing along on a sheet of glass with the wind gently puffing your sails, or rolling up and down giant grey tempestuous waves at nearly 45, your hull periodically exploding, and pounding rain slowly flooding the lower decks. I should mention at this point that the water in this game is some of the prettiest I've seen - Equi and I have separately concocted the joke "3 years development? 2 years on the water", it does look great. The islands you visit also posses their own charm with their towering peaks, hidden caverns, considered vistas, and humorously posed skeletons.

Anyway, back to sailing. Once you've gotten the hang of tacking and trimming the sails, the differences in handling and controls between a sloop and a galleon, when and when not to anchor so not to damage your ship, pesky sand bars, suddenly approaching (I swear they were invisible) rocks, and how to organise things whether you're sailing solo or in a 4 man group (much harder than it sounds) you've then got PvP to look forward to.

Maritime engagements can be tricky, and very fun. Typically you'll be sailing at full chat, struggling to aim a cannon at another vessel doing the same as you both ride up and down choppy waters occasionally disappearing behind walls of blue. While you're doing this of course, you'll have your captain at the helm barking orders to tack the sails so you can 'broadside the bastards', or do an emergency trim or anchor turn to avoid a previously unforeseen beaching. Your enemy is a wily one, a member of their crew fires themselves out of one of their cannons in an effort to board, meanwhile you wonder how clever it really was to start all of this with 20 chests in the hold and only 30 cannonballs in reserve.

At it's core, Sea of Thieves is a deeply flawed game, but whole is certainly greater than the sum of it's parts. There is a surprising level of depth to the sandbox elements of the game, which you're encouraged to explore by the somewhat shallow quests. Is it worth the 50 asking price? No, at least not right now, but it's certainly worth paying 3 for the xbox game pass on cdkeys to experience this thing for a couple months and get a flavour of the possibilities to come.

Put it this way, I've practically played nothing else for the last week.

Yep, if you're on Windows 10 anyway.

    Step 1.
Buy this, ignore the new accounts thing: https://www.cdkeys.com/xbox-live/mem...s-xbox-one-360

    Step 2.
    Open the Microsoft Store app

    Step 3.
Log in and redeem 1 month code

    Step 4.
Say YES you do want to turn on auto-renew to get an extra moonth

    Step 5.
Immediately cancel the auto-renew so you don't pay another 8 after 2 months

    Step 6.
Download Sea of Thieves and anything else that you fancy playing while on the game pass.

Note: This is how it worked for me, Equi, Post, Boylee, Sero, etc. The 'new account' thing might be applicable if you've bought a game pass before, no idea.
