So, How screwed is my monitor?

    I got up this morning, turned on my pc and farted about on youtube before I noticed a blue line down the right hand side of my monitor;

It's a Samsung 2443BW bought in 09 so I'd assume the warranty is out of date.

Any ideas gents? or Good suggestions for a new monitor?

    Cheers

Does it disappear or change colour if you flex the bezel slightly directly above or below it?

Does it appear when the PC is off and you turn on the monitor and access the OSD?

What I'm getting at is, are you absolutely sure it's the monitor at fault?

Yeah I've turned off the PC itself and the blue line appears at the 'No connection found' idle state. Which is rather shit, Bloody thing cost 200 quid and is (to my mind) relatively new.

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious. palm pilot's Avatar

I've now noticed a slight yellowing at the top of the blue line.

EDIT: Drivers changed, cable checked and DVI port on my card changed.

A quick google suggests that when people have had this issue with your monitor they've had to replace the panel - sounds screwed :|

Yeah hardware's farked by the sound of it. I was hoping it might be a dink on the back causing unnatural pressure on the top of the panel. Sometimes you can fix that issue by prying off the bezel and Jerry rigging it. If pressure does nothing and the fault still displays with no input source it sounds like it's a repair / replace jobby. Sorry fella. :/

Ah shit, time to price up a new monitor, 16:10 1920x1200 monitors are still fairly pricey at a glance

Now to make things confusing, the mumble window goes over the top of the blue line. I'm rather confused now.

Re: So, How screwed is my monitor?

How much did it originally cost? 6 Years for a monitor is a respectable lifespan, especially when most warranties only last 2-3 years and it could have easily kicked the bucket weeks afterwards (this is usually how companies like to build their products for optimum profit). If it lasts significantly longer than the warranty, you were lucky enough to get it out of a good batch.

Obviously nobody wants to replace a piece of hardware if they don't have too and it otherwise should work perfectly. But yea, 6 years is a decent run. That's about how often i replace my whole rig.

The entire window, or just the white parts? If the monitor is displaying it's full blue output on that line all the time, then when it displays white (full red, green and blue) it will look normal. The fault will onlybe visible when the monitor isn't trying to output full blue in the affected area.

Re: So, How screwed is my monitor?

I had something similar on my previous monitor - running horizontally as a black line. It was considerably older than yours but after a bit of google searching I couldn't find an answer. In the end, as I was saving up for a new rig, I invested in a new monitor at the same time.

You'd appear to be correct Boylee. I cannot find a reasonably priced 1920x1200/16:10 Monitor like this one. It's all 1080p.

Had exactly the same thing happen to a Samsung monitor. Was told by repair shop it was not fixable and was a hardware fail.

Yeah unfortunately 1920x1600 is no longer considered a common size, much like 1680x1050. 1920x1080 is the new standard, and whilst it does kind of suck that you lose the height, the one upside is that panels in that format are very competitively priced because they're manufactured in such vast numbers.
