Interesting, but not good, unless they opt for some additional EDRAM to compensate for the timing failure of GDDR5
At least with PC's using DDR3, you can improve throughput by adding more sticks, with GDDR5, that timing bottleneck is there no matter how much RAM you have.

The cpu architecture is good, though it's not going to guarantee that ports are as straightforward as they (in theory) should be.

Also, not showing the console is a weird move :S

The whole thing was just a "we are 100% showing a new console at E3...make sure to hype it up for us and then come to E3, k thx bye"

Otherwise everyone would get to E3 and say "ya, we've already seen that, let's go look at the new xbox".

My take on it anyway. They're saving the mystery for the real show.

True that, to be fair I was never interested in the console itself, only how the specifications may affect the PC industry.

Diablo III on PS3 was more interesting to me - wonder if they will share AH with PC. Not a surprise but nice to see our PC beta testers job is done

Like the sound of what theyre doing with this machine.

Bit strange we didn't see the console itself.

also no Last Guardian. Time to hope for E3

    Re: Playstation 4 2013?!?!?!

Looks like both next gen big boys are going AMD. This has pretty big implications for game optimisation and PC ports, not to mention nVidia are going to have to pull some special moves to keep up.

    Re: Playstation 4 2013?!?!?!

I don't think the choice of AMD's APUs will affect nVidia too much to be honest.
It is indeed good news for PC though. Along with the great news from a GDC survey that says PC is the prime platform for game developers, based on (probably) the uncertain nature of the console future, and the relative standardisation of architecture.

You don't think it will affect nVidia? I would've thought that if the majority of ports from console are optimised for AMD GPU architecture it would likely have an influence on how nVidia create their architecture and write their drivers.

    Re: Playstation 4 2013?!?!?!

The good money at the moment is that most games are either being or going to be made with PC as the lead platform due to developers being unsure on how popular new console uptake will be, along with the fact that porting either way will be easier. (It's also worth noting that there is little you can do in development to optimise for a specific GPU architecture, beyond use any built in tech such as PhysX(or Havok). Unless creating engines from scratch, of which we won't see any console targeted ones for at least a year(that is just a guess, though).)

nVidia don't have to change their architecture for anything, it wouldn't really achieve anything, GPU architecture isn't the same as a CPU in that respect. The only thing that would affect it (maybe) is if AMD release some sort of proprietary tech that nVidia need to account for. A good example would be if the new TressFX shader stuff was proprietary (fortunately nVidia and AMD have a relatively respectful relationship so this is not the case), and developers start using it on console a lot.

For nVidia it's really just going to be business as usual, their money will come from the PC industry as usual, and AMD will be being kept afloat by their no doubt pretty cheap contracts from MS and Sony. AMD will continue making PC based architecture, which will be the driving force behind the advancement of the GPU tech.

Sure drivers need to be made with the games in mind, but that really will be no different than it is now, and it will give no real advantage to AMD that their tech is in the consoles, especially given that drivers tend to target the latest iterations of GPUs, which will not be the console APU.

Interesting article about future proofing PCs to compete with next gen console architecture.

TL;DR: looks like AMD processor architecture and GPUs with 2GB+ of GDDR5 RAM are the way to go for the next gen of gaming PC.

The 'reveal' is apparently going to be the 21st of May, not that there's much left to reveal, since it's all been leaked

Why would you put this in the PS4 thread?

    Re: Playstation 4 2013?!?!?!

Because there isn't an 'new Xbox thread' and this one has sort of transformed into a next-gen console discussion thread anyway.

    Re: Playstation 4 2013?!?!?!

I don't think there are many playstuffers particularly interested in the consoles, so one thread to dump any slightly interesting info is probably better than two imo.

Funny picture found in a reddit thread talking about microsofts complicity in the prism programm (funny in this case is used as one of those nice english placeholder words that can mean anything according to context, e. g. bloody, fucking)
