URGENT ESSAY PROBLEMS: I need your help

    Hey Guys.

Came back from being up North to my sister totally distraught. She has almost finished one of her essays for Uni and went to open it this evening and Microsoft Word 2003 does not seem to be able to identify how the text is encoded:

I have tried selecting all the different codes to get one previews as 'non-jibberish' and nothing works.

Could someone please help as her essay is due on thursday and is not yet finished. Here is an attached copy of the essay, I couldn't send the word file so it has to be in .txt sorry.

    Your help is much appreciated.

If it is a doc file that has corrupted, I need the actual doc file as it was. The text file isnt of much use as a file in doc format contains information other than text.

The other thing you can try is to get on the computer she used to write it and check the following folders for any temporary files/backups:

    %Appdata%\Microsoft\Word

    C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Local\Temp

    (sort by date)

Is all I managed to get - it looks as if rather than the text being corrupted, it just isnt there in the first place. I've a couple of programs that I've used before with success but none of them worked.

I get the idea that the file is unrecoverable. Possibly it was halfway through saving when a USB was pulled out, it appears that a lot of the file just isn't there.

Hopefully someone else might have some luck, fingers crossed.

Let this be a lesson to all. ALWAYS BACK UP! Or use a program like dropbox to sync your docs to an online server

Yeah, I haven't plucked up the courage yet to say that she should have backed up her essay incase she smacks me in the face. I'm working on my disseratation just now and it is backed up in 4 places (My PC, Laptop and two memory sticks) just to be extra safe.

dropbox is for windows, mac and linux btw.

Syncs your pcs, keeps online copies (including past revisions, if you need to access something you saved over/deleted) and you can share folders to sync with other dropbox users! Good if you dont have your PC to hand but need to grab a file.

but anywayy... I would recommend any program like that. syncplicity is another good one for anybody interested.

Another great app for backing stuff up / replacing your memory is Evernote. I use it for grabbing info from the web and filing it...or just storing photos (has exif gps)....files

1,200 words of 2,000. Shes doing her Masters so it is a pretty difficult essay to rewrite. Don't think she has any previous copies

There's also a hard to find option in Word 2003 and 2007 - "Open and Repair"
    See here

(I can't seem to grab either of the txt or doc files to try it myself though)

Ok, grabbed a copy now but don't have many of my tools ro hand as I'm not at home atm.
Unfotunately there's not any specific Word recovery tools in the excellent Computer Repair Utility Kit (which you now have to grab individually from here (or I can upload a zip of it all when I'm at work tomorrow). This is an essential tool - you can stick it on a usb stick and forget about it until you need it.

Next step Jambo is to look to recover the file or a previous version (or even a temp version that has been overwritten) on the hard drive itself. Both Restoration and Recuva are freeware and worth a shot.
As Carbon said, there's very little evidence in the file you posted of actual text which is normally there so I'd hunt for temporary files or deleted temp files - search the entire drive and go by date.
    Good Luck!
