    Portal 2 Ingame Mapmaker

As a member of the 'I'd love to make maps but it's way too hard and takes way too long and hammer keeps crashing' community, I'd like to point out that the Portal 2 ingame mapmaker DLC is incredible. Very simple, very smooth, and absolutely a joy to work with. Not as customisable as hammer, of course, but a whole lot easier to use and a whole lot quicker to produce results.

I recommend people give it a whirl.

It's a good gateway drug for the sdk too since it spits out a vmf that you can load in hammer.

We should have a thread where people can post their portal 2 chambers.

A note to the people using Hammer, though, a number of guys over at TF2maps have had their P2 files corrupted after installing this. Symptoms have varied from only needing to verify game files to avoid fatal errors, to a complete reinstall of the authoring tools.

Even I could map with this. Looking forward to playing with it.

I love the puzzle maker, but I really hope they add some extras I miss (unless I actually missed them in the puzzle maker)

The option to add invisible events would be cool, maybe some more timing options.
A way to add custom graffito and such would also be great.

The functionality is already there bro, it's in hammer.

If you make the core of the puzzle in the editor you can fully customize what you've made in hammer. Hit me up if you need help with entities and such.

Was thinking of making some sort of (Playstuff?) campaign.
So adding some sort of background test would be great, I should probably have a look at it.

They were removed for very good reasons. Mostly being imprecise and uncontrollable. But as Boylee mentioned above, you can reinstate them via Hammer.

    Re: Portal 2 Ingame Mapmaker

    A note for aspiring mapmakers:

A player shouldn't have to restart because they tried the wrong thing first, or explored too much,
Try and make it so that there is rarely a place that someone can't, at the very least, portal back to their starting point.

Reloading the map is not fun

So far I've only played 3 playstuffian maps...

I've managed to get stuck or end up in locations I can't get out of on all of them

mostly all-acid-floors are the culprit...trapping a player on a platform which has no portal surfaces.
Although Boylee managed to trap me with a funnel which ended inside an open cube
(the only open side was where the funnel went in, pinning me inside)

Yeah, don't abuse acid floors - there are other ways to tell player "you failed and fell down!" than forcing them to start everything over

Mr. Sloth, I have white paint waiting on line 3, he's says he wants to talk to you regarding TROLOLOLO precise design philosophy.

My medium-term goal is to create a decent puzzle with white paint which can't be cheated. I think I need much more practice right now.

white paint is controllable, it depends on the orientation of your portal

    Re: Portal 2 Ingame Mapmaker

Does anyone know if I make a map using the in-game editor...and then add/tweak some stuff using the SDK:

you can't do thin walls (other than using a grate or window), and you can't place half-width panels
So if i made a map and added those after

1 - is it still openable in the in-game editor?
2 - can I still add it to my list or maps in the workshop, or include it in a collection
3 - can others still access and play it just as easily (through the workshop) as non-sdk maps ?

    Thanks

    Re: Portal 2 Ingame Mapmaker

Judging by other maps seen in Workshop, you can add custom maps to workshop. For example, 12 Angry Tests were made in Hammer (I assume SDK=Hammer, but I might be horribly wrong ), then they were added to Workshop (so the answer to 2 is YES) and they are easily accessed (so the answer to 3 is YES).

    sweet

    Tweaking to be done then!

(SDK = Software Development Kit, it's generic, so in this case, I guess meant Hammer )
