My wife treated me to a Mechanical Keyboard - it's just arrived :)

    with a little customisation

    I'm a little bit excited

If you fancy a quality keyboard I'd recommend the guys I bought from http://thekeyboardco.com : they are an awesome bunch and deserve support as a small indy company.

Great, good for you I wish such keyboards were more popular where I live, but unfortunately everytime I visit a few computer shops I see a lot of very flat, almost the same keyboards with a lot of additional keys and wheels (which would be redundant for me) and not really appealing design...
Being used to regular, old Logitech Y-SU61 (and I'm still using it) I'd really love to see a few compact, qood quality, high-button (with distinctive click sound) keyboards around...
Have some nice gaming (and other stuff) with it, thanks to your wife

Hey, you can type small, nearly invisible text under your post. (or invisible!) That's great! - I know neat trick isn't it ?

The Sero was heeeeereeee! (although he doesn't even know!) I think it's about time we got some orange text in this.
I like tomatoes That's true, dear Stranger!I almost forgot to post here. Huh? Someone say my name?

I'm pretty much addicted to the lcd console of my g15, but can totally understand the want-to-have factor here on having a mechanical kb. Enjoy it!

That looks very nice Mark, I might well have to look at picking up one of these in the near future. I'd probably go for MX blacks though because I play fps games near exclusively. I noticed Filco also do keyboards with digits on the front of the keys instead of the top (I think they are called Ninja Majestouch) and they look boss. :3

EDIT: yeah here they are, only come with MX Brown switches from what I can tell though. :/

Since your post on FB I looked at a few and seen this Tt eSPORTS , but I wouldnt mind one with a backlight too..

I've already got this Keysonic keyboard with backlight, but the keys are not that good and break easily. I've had this about a year now and 1 has broken already and |'ve replaced it with a key I don't use

    hmmmm...

I'm torn between the minimalist look of the Filco boards and the slick palm wrist of the Corsair K60:

Also here's that Filco Ninja board I was talking about earlier:

I wish I had some way of trying out different switches before buying, I guess I'd want MX blacks, but I think the quiet tactility of MX browns may be appealing too. :/

For FPS you're fine with any of them really Matt. Blacks are pretty hard to press but do get softer.

Browns are ideal if you don't want clicky. I personally like the tactile feedback (or 'bump') that the Browns and Blues give you.

Black have a linear action - not tactile, no bump. Worse for typing too.

I originally had the Ninja down as the own for me at the place I got mine http://thekeyboardco.com but decided I didn't want the challenge - in low light esp they are hard to see any print on (I'm sitting here in low light now and it's hard to see the side printed arrows on my custom WASD - and they're yellow/black). Also, ch3ecked with the guys at tkc and they sell blank keys for 20 for the whole keyset - so I may blank Some in future).

By the way, if you want to go the extras steps into geek porn keyboard land - check out http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/ <<<< full customisation of entire keysets

Re: My wife treated me to a Mechanical Keyboard - it's just arrived :)

By the way, if you want a really cute and compact Mech Keyboard and don't want to spend as much as the Filco's and are happy with a lighter, less well built keyboard, I recommend the Choco Mini http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:13825 Which is pretty awesome.

I could only find one place that sold them in the UK http://www.ecrater.co.uk/p/11827496/...ical-cherry-mx but if you google them you'll find them available to import.

    There's lots on ebay too.

Feel free to hit me up if you want any advice. I've spent countless hours researching mech keyboards.

Razer do the Black Widow - which is a mech keyboard with some fan base. In my experience though, Razer products can be prone to breaking quickly.

The other notables are : Das Keyboard http://www.daskeyboard.com/ which has many fans - and also comes in a totally blank keyset. I dismissed it as it's also a fingerprint magnet due to it's shiny surface.

Steel series do the well thought of 6g2 and 7g. Again, good things said about it. Tt eSports do the Meka G1 which is also popular.

Stay away from anything i've not mentioned - including the corsair. They all have known issues that make them less reliable and if you are getting a mech keyboard, the one thing you should be able to count on is reliability.

Oh, and Matt - that's not that slick a palm rest Chech out the filco leather palm rest is you want quality and have 45 to waste I prefer the option I went for - recyling my old A4 size Razer mousemat - which is exactly the same length as my keyboard and provides a nice surface to rest your wrist on - whilst at them same time reducing the 'is my wife gonna leave me cos my keyboard is so fecking loud' factor - the tubber stops noise tranmission to your desktop surface and means only high frequency sounds can be heard; which of course don't pass through walls like the good old low freq ones do .

Re: My wife treated me to a Mechanical Keyboard - it's just arrived :)

I'm like many of you guys, the tactile response of the mechanical keyboard is important to me for a number of reasons. It lets me know how i'm performing as i type, rather than after i've made the mistake and seen it on the screen. Yea, i don't look at the keyboard whilst typing which is something i spent months if not years in my teens trying to achieve and when it happened i didn't even realise, it was just natural; and that's made the mechanical keyboard even more important for me i would say.

I used to use Macs for 3-4 years whilst at university and the streamlined keyboards were just "odd". They weren't terribad by any means, but i'd often find i'd not press a button hard enough and thus make more typing errors as i don't have that tactile feedback.

Your mouse looks very inspired by the old Razer Deathadder - if it functions similarly I'm sure it's a great piece of kit, mine's still serving me well.

Interesting stuff about the keyboards. If I'm honest I've never really thought about mine. How have you been finding it, now that you've had it for a bit?
