Yeah, I'm also going to play it. I played the "demo" ages back, and actually really enjoyed it. Away missions were... a touch naff, but hey, it's all about the ships for me anyway ^^

But yeah, I really didn't/don't wanna be paying monthly for one game out of hundreds I play, so been waiting for the inevitable FTP switch, and here it is Hope they've done a good job of it...

Re: Star Trek Online Free to Play

3 page necro bumping this thread \o/. I was playing this with a local friend of mine a few weeks ago for a bit and got thoroughly addicted to it. Usually i really dislike mmo's, but since this one is F2P and star trek i've been happily progressing through the ranks with around 200 hours game time now.

I have 2 starfleet characters, 1 level 41 "Engi" human female and 1 level 28 Tactical pseudo-Vulcan (alien that looks Vulcan so i could specify space specs) male. Named Kati@USS Zealous and P'Larrst@USS Clio respectively.

Not sure how many people here are playing it still but perhaps it might be worth making a mini fleet or something.

I started playing it a few days ago, but at the moment I'm quite disappointed with controls and general gameplay - the only thing that may keep me playing it is the fact that I'm a big Star Trek fan, not sure if it's enough :/ I'll give to some more tries though.

Re: Star Trek Online Free to Play

What part of the controls do you dislike? The land missions are pretty lame, but i forgive it because A) it's an mmo so combat is bound to be "the same old mmo mechanics" and B) It's Star Trek.

I spend most of my time doing space missions, PvP and daily PvE events (the daily events are against bosses instead of unreasonable amounts of enemy minion space ship cluster fucks, just my personal preference to go against the big guys). I'm really enjoying the space battles, it's just a shame most of the replayability lies in the combat missions that require as much DPS as possible so science specs tend to take a back seat in anything other than the most unique circumstances.

Re: Star Trek Online Free to Play

At the moment I hate mainly the combat controls - starting with the fact that I have to activate 2 modes just to shoot someone :/ Also weapon usage in ship phase.
Thinking about MMORPG I was rather expecting some nice land walking, fights etc, but maybe I should consider the battleship as my character, not the bajoran captain...
To be honest, I spent juast about couple of hours in the game yet, so I can't say much and there's still a possibility I can get used to some discomforts... I'm still pretty confused about the powers and officers in ship menu and about different aspects of land missions - equipment, loot, vendors... But I'm hoping it will get clearer later... I also dislike the general "silence" - I feel so "lonely" (lol) and totally not engaged in game's world...
Nevertheless, the character creating screen astonished me, (as a saga fan) I could just sit and create characters for hours if there was any point in it

Re: Star Trek Online Free to Play

Some of it is a bit overwhelming and to be honest my first character has some funky a-typical specs which wouldn't bother me so much were it not for the character limitation for F2P being restricted to 2. I didn't fully understand everything until mid 20's (commander)/40 hours of gameplay.

I'm not aware of any "modes" necassery to initiate combat, usually it's "get into range, fire"; which can be done automatically or manually with a mouse click to specify a target if you don't want to shoot the closest enemy. Very rarely there are missions that benefit from passive mode when using your away team to sneak past enemies, but i'm still not sure exactly what you're refering too.

With a game this extensive it's worth doing a little research/reading.

I guess the most important things to realise is that different captains will lean towards a particular style of play and this is even more true for space battles as different weapon kinds are often specific for the tactical captain. Such as "cannons" that have a high dps and narrow arc of fire. These weapons cannot be equipped by the other 2 captains so Engineers wont have the option of direct high DPS combat unless they invest a consirable amount of ingame currency or real money in a "special" ship that allows them to do so (dreadnaught cruiser).

I guess the unfortunate thing is that you have to start speccing your character for end-game from the very beginning, for example, choosing your race and secondary perks has a performance impact throughout the games length.

If you have any specific questions i'll be happy with answer them.

I'm installing it now. Have you got any general pointers for new players? I was considering going for a sciency vulcan type.. but I don't really know how the game mechanics work.

    Spocky Spock.

About battle - well, during tutorial I had to activate battle mode (B key?) to get in stance and click-to-fire and also activate targeting mode to actually aim at anything (and shoot with LMB) - that's what I meant.

Question that bothers me - how do the saves work? Can I exit the game and continue it later in any moment? Or should I be aware of some good-to-leave points (like being in town after a mission in Diablo 2 etc.). And what happens if I/my squad member die, either on ground or ship destruction?

Ground fighting was actually very poorly explained I think. As far as I can tell, what they've done is fairly clever - the different modes don't really affect how good you are, just how you prefer to play it. You can fight just fine by clicking on the baddies like in a normal mmo, or pressing B brings you into a third-person action mode and pressing X changes it into a first-person mode. That's my interpretation anyway.

I'll experiment more a little later.

Re: Star Trek Online Free to Play

Yea, it's not necassery to aim, it's just something for the guys who prefer that kind of action. I tend not to use that mode because it never tells you whether your foes are in range so i do everything on the fly.

Most people will tend to tell you to avoid science char's unless you want to do ground missions as in the high end difficulty modes his heals are more useful, as otherwise there's no punishment for death besides the respawn wave of ~6 seconds which makes the science buffs situational at best.

If you intend to play F2P i'd recommend engi or tactical so you can still solo most of the missions as unfortunately most of the game relies on high DPS. Engineer is capable because it's a tank class so battles just tend to last longer until you get better personal buffs and can level your bridge officers to do more than just base DPS. If you intend to buy 2 more character slots (which i did) then grabbing a science character is a nice change if anything else.

I don't remember 100% if you can choose a second federation character before you hit level 20, because at level 20 you unlock access to the Klingon Empire and can choose to spec a Klingon as your second character, but it also locks access to the federation. So whether you prefer the federation or not, it might be worth grabbing a second fed character whilst you still can so you can spec an engi/tact and then use your alt for your experimental sci' char'.

EDIT: In terms of role playing, engi char's use the Kirk and Picard cruiser ships from the original series and TNG whilst tactical use the Defiant style ship from DS9. Science captians get to use the Voyager ship (intrepid class). Tactical ships can use phasers, but the bridge officer perks are better suited to cannons as your abilities/buffs will allow you to do special cannon attacks and equipping phasers will limit your DPS/burst damage. Cruisers and science vessels are pretty much stuck with phaser arrays and turrets for energy weapons, although science vessels have superior AoE attacks like "eject warp plasma", or deflector abilities like tachyon beams which siphone enemy shields, sensor jam and other spell style attacks; These can be useful for confusing enemies in PvP, ablities like "viral matrix" can temporarily disable enemy bridge officer buff abilities from being used and abilities like tractor beam can stop enemies from escaping via "cloak" or "evasive manouvres". but you tend to be out DPS'd in a straight battle and many of your abilities will require you to get closer to the enemy. Weapon range is capped at 10km whilst many of your science abilities will require a proximity of 7.5-5km.

Cruisers have superior hull hit points and hull armour and if you spec some good shield buffs on your bridge officers you can be a real pain in the arse to take out. Engi classes have a higher survivability whilst tactical classes depend on higher DPS's to overwhelm their enemies.

Re: Star Trek Online Free to Play

According to http://www.startrekonline.com/f2p_features you can have 1 Federation character and 1 Klingon character for free.

Still, what about saves, if you want to stop playing for a moment where and when is the safe moment to exit it?

Re: Star Trek Online Free to Play

If you want to min/max it tactical is the way to go but it's a bit counter intuitive to the whole Star Trek feel.... you equip a tactical ship with a turret and lots of cannons and just sit still blasting. If you want a cool Star Trek Experience using the classic ships (Constitution Class, Galaxy Class, Sovereign Class) then Engineer is the way to go.

It's worth noting that class doesn't limit the ships you can get, but if you're a new player i'd definitely suggest Engineer in Cruisers, Science in Science Vessals and Tactical in Escorts. You can get funky later on once you're comfortable with the mechanics.

It's an MMO. You can pretty much log out whenever you want and you're progress is kept on the server. Some of the ground missions you may have to replay but they tend to be 20 mins to an hour. The death penalty is pretty negligible

Yea, there are check points, usually these are after all zone objectives are complete and/or you get teleported down to the ground or up into your ship, your progress will reset to those points, or after pseudo boss fights.

It's also worth noting that it's never worth skilling the full 9 out of 9 in your skill menu as the last 8-9 only give you a single point in that area. It's better to level up to 6 or 7 if you really want to perform a little better. Speccing to 6 will get you most of (if not all) the captain bridge officer training perks and allow you to put more points into the admiral tier skills.

Guys I'm really loving this game actually. Can we hook up and shoot some Klingons or something? I'm level 12 at the moment.

Let's do some missions this evening I reckon.

Sure, although i'm still having trouble figuring out how to add friends. Add "Kati(@Zealous)" if you can, that's my main (level 43 engi). "P'Larrst(@Clio) is my alt tactical at level 28 or something like that.

Ah, i think i got the "hanger" wrong. I'm guessing that after the @ comes the account name? In which case add Kati@grazr + P'larrst@grazr
