    Customising damage text

    Bob asked me how I did this. Figured it'd be useful to share.

    Damage text is a feature in the TF2 multilayer options under advanced, it tells you how much damage each hit does, and it's extremely useful and educational (for example, compare an engi's shotgun at range and the pistol)

    The default colour is red. Which sucks, because most of the landscape in TF2 is beige. If you want to correct this awful design flaw then do the following.

    Make a new folder in

    ~\Steam\steamapps\{yoursteamidhere}\team fortress 2\tf\resource

    called "ui". On some installs this may already exist.

    Make a new notepad file in this new folder. Paste in the following:

    Code:
    "Resource/UI/HudDamageAccount.res"
    {
        "CDamageAccountPanel"
        {
            "fieldName"                "CDamageAccountPanel"
            "text_x"                "0"
            "text_y"                "0"
            "delta_item_end_y"        "0"
            "PositiveColor"            "255 255 0 255"
            "NegativeColor"            "255 255 0 255"
            "delta_lifetime"        "1.5"
            "delta_item_font"        "HudFontMedium"
            "delta_item_font_big"    "HudFontMedium"
        }
    }
    Save this as HudDamageAccount.res in ~resource\ui

    This will:

    change the damagetext colour to yellow, and in slightly bolder text than default.

    You can adjust the colour by changing both PositiveColor and NegativeColor's values. These are typed as "[RedValue] [BlueValue] [GreenValue] [Alpha]". Adjust the RGB's for your favourite colour, and adjust the alpha to give transparency (0 is invisible, 255 is non transparent).

    The font can only be changed to a limited number of options, the only ones I know are: HudFontSmall, HudFontMedium, HudFontLarge. By default, they are

    "delta_item_font" "HudFontSmall" <-- this value for most hits
    "delta_item_font_big" "HudFontNormal" <-- for value for critical hits

    As a side note, many HUDs you can install, like CommHUD, actually do this automatically.
