Interesting stuff indeed. The advent of massively multicore computing alongside biometric monitoring makes for a very intriguing prospect. Games that react to how your feeling and respond accordingly, now that sounds mind blowing. It would completely revolutionise non-linearity in games and would guarantee a different play though each time. Exciting stuff Gabe.
I wish he would say SOMETHING about Episode 3 though.

Meh, I must admit.... I don't actually care about episode 3. If anything, I just want them to bring it out so it's over.
Valve's best thing is invention. New things. Look at Half Life, FPS redefinition. TF2, large team teamwork definition. L4D, small team teamwork, and AI director innovation. Portal, innovation innovation (). Even as far as sequels go, they change. HL2 is very different from the first one, in terms of both gameplay, setting and story, despite the fact it's the same universe.
Yet for HL2, we've already had 3 games for it. The episodes were just the main game made shorter and with a little story continuation, and Ep 2 didn't even really have that, it sort of meandered. They had the same build up, the same events, and the same climax.
I've got bored of HL, I've done it. It was fantastic, but lets go for new.

I'm with you on that. Mainly because I still haven't got round to finishing Ep2....
I have all episodes and as you say, they are superb - but I got Counter Strike with them, and multiplayer always does it for me, so I left the rest.
Bought orange box to finish collection. Hence TF2 got played not HL.
I've played through with Jim and a few others in co-op modded multiplayer goodness.
I would be much more excited to play Portal 2, and then whatever else they can come up with.
I don't think this is entirely fair. Half life is historically one of the most important games to FPS gaming. We'd not be playing FPS's in the same way we are now if Valve hadn't created Half life 1 & 2.
Personally I've invested a fair amount of time in both and the story still interests me, I'm sure it does others too. It's also worth noting that because of the popularity of HL Valve have been able to innovate knowing that there's a safe income from the HL series. A good example of this is the Orange Box, one part safe product, one part guaranteed success and one part experiment. Episode one also brought us the innovation of HDR rendering as a standard feature for all of Valve's current games.
I'm quite interested to see what Valve will bring with Ep3 as each installment to date has heralded fairly, if not very, significant developments. I think they're planning something very exciting for Ep3 given how closely they're keeping their cards to their chest.
In short, Valve need Episode 3 as much as we do if we expect them to continue innovating.
My best guess is more of a wish : that they release HL3 in an orange box style bundle with a new Counter Strike or something similar (for the multiplayer element) along with another innovative new product to test all their psychological, emotional and iris science inspired gaming experiments out.

CS2 would be bloody epic. imagine a box with that and Portal 2.
Won't happen though I don't think, it looks like they'll be selling Portal 2 as a standalone. Singleplayer plus a fully separate multiplayer campaign justifies that really.
I remember a while back that during an interview with GameTrailersTV, Gabe said that if he got over 15,000 emails about CS2 then they might start considering it. He got 40,000. So maybe, just maybe it's being worked on. They'd have to work damn hard if they want to beat BC2, though. Destructable terrain in CS anyone?
