Open Source Alternative to Commercial Software

Free - both the Mac and PC built-in ones aren't actually too shabby at all - I've used Microsoft Windows Movie Maker and thought it was pretty good TBH.
Adobe Premier for editing and After Effects for post processing are Industry standard tools as is Final Cut Pro but all are pricey (easily available elsewhere depending on your morals but invariably laden with malware/trojans etc)
This is a great link for OpenSource Alternative to Commercial Software and here's the Wikipedia version of a similar list.

I made this into it's own thread to sticky as it is such a useful resource.

Also check http://github.com (social coding - hardcore geekery) and http://sourceforge.net (full of stuff, lots great - often a solution available)

Open Source FTW! I never use 'paid-for' software anymore, there's really no need. How someone can justify all that money for something like MS Office, when there's something as competent as Open Office out there, I just don't get it!

Because most people don't justify the money any more.

Not sure if you're aware of this but there's a great website I use to find alternative freeware software to fully paid for applications. The site offers Windows, Mac and Linux options as well as on-line cloud based solutions
